Album/CD recording names are italicized. Individual songs are set in quotation marks. Instrumental music such as symphonies, quartets, rhapsodies, etc., that also include a number or key signature in the title should be capitalized but not italicized.
Most commonly, italics are used for emphasis or contrast that is, to draw attention to some particular part of a text.
Italicize titles if the source is self-contained and independent. Titles of books, plays, films, periodicals, databases, and websites are italicized. Place titles in quotation marks if the source is part of a larger work. Articles, essays, chapters, poems, webpages, songs, and speeches are placed in quotation marks.
If you know that a song was originally released on its own, however, you may style it in italics. A music video is the visual equivalent of a song so is styled in quotation marks.
When italic type is not available (for example, in a typewriter or handwritten manuscript), underline to indicate italics; if the manuscript is later set in type, the typesetter will use italics for underlined words. 1. Titles. Italicize the titles of things that can stand by themselves.
Magazines/Newspapers Italicize the name of the publication. Do not capitalize magazine unless its part of the publications title or masthead.
TV shows will be italicized, while the names of individual episodes will be in quotes.
What is the purpose of italics? Italics are used primarily to denote titles and names of particular works or objects in order to allow that title or name to stand out from the surrounding sentence. Italics may also be used for emphasis in writing, but only rarely.
