When should italics not be used? Italics should not be used for the titles of short works, such as poems, articles, short stories, or song namesall of which use quotation marks instead. The names of geographic locations and religious texts use neither italics nor quotes, but theyre still capitalized.
1 Answer. Generally, titles of books, films, TV shows, and plays should either be itallicized or put in quotes (In the case of TV shows, if the show is written in one way, an episode title will be written in the other.). In quotes, its generally best to use italicization for the title.
Italics are used primarily to denote titles and names of particular works or objects in order to allow that title or name to stand out from the surrounding sentence. Italics may also be used for emphasis in writing, but only rarely.
Use only as an adjective, not as a noun. Dont use italics or italicized. To make the selected characters italic, select Ctrl+I.
Use quotation marks to enclose direct quotes and the titles of short works. Use italics for the titles of long works and foreign words. Dont use underlining for anything other than live links. Never use both italics and quotes; its always one or the other.
Finally, italicizing dialogue can set a distinct tone and atmosphere, making the technique useful for writers of any skill level hoping to achieve a subdued, otherworldly effect in their narration.
Using Italics In Dialogue One area of screenwriting in that italics has become common is within the dialogue to clarify certain things. Some scripts that have multiple languages will use italics to indicate that a specific dialogue is in a foreign language but subtitled in the common language of the screenplay.
For example, if you want all of your action to be in italics, Go to Format Elements Settings (Windows) or Format Elements (Mac); Choose Action from the list on the left; Click the Font tab; Click Set Font; Click Italics in the Font Style box (Windows) or Style Attributes box (Mac) and OK your way back to the script.
