In the early 1900s on the island of Crete, British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans uncovered nearly 3,000 tablets inscribed with strange symbols. He thought these symbols represented the language spoken by Europes oldest civilization. Their meaning would elude scholars for 50 years. Evans discovered these tablets amid the colorful frescoes and maze-like hallways of the palace of Knossos. He called the civilization Minoan after the mythical Cretan ruler, King Minos. Italic font, or italics, is a style of typeface in which the text appears slanted, like this. While italics are mainly used to draw attention to certain words or passages, the font also plays an important role in differentiating the titles and names of thingssuch as novels, movies, and even spaceshipsfrom other text.
Change the font style: Tap the font name, tap. next to the font name, then tap a format (regular, bold, italic or semibold, for example).
transitive verb. 1. : to print in italics or underscore with a single line. 2. : emphasize.
When you italicize your writing, you print or type in the slanted letters called italics. You can italicize a word in a sentence when you want to emphasize it. People italicize for various reasons: they might italicize the title of a book, or a section of dialogue thats yelled by a character in a story.
Italics are typically used to show emphasis (For example: I dont care what he thinks. I do what I want!) or to indicate titles of stand-alone works (Black Panther, Lost in Translation).
Most commonly, italics are used for emphasis or contrast that is, to draw attention to some particular part of a text. Here are some examples: The Battle of New Orleans was fought in January 1815, two weeks after the peace treaty had been signed.
