Vectors, tensors and matrices are usually denoted using a bold-face (heavy) font, but they should still be italic since they are still quantities.
First, note that while variables and numbers should be italicized, the following elements of equations should be set in roman type: function names, units, words, and abbreviations thereof.
Vectors are denoted by boldface lowercase letters (such as a,b). To indicate their dimensions, we use notation like a Rn. The ith element of a is written as ai or a(i).
Italicize variables, but use roman type for SD, SE, CV, etc. See also Math and Statistics.
This is the standard way of representing emphasis or contrast; you should not try to use quotation marks or other punctuation marks for this purpose. Another use of italics is to cite titles of complete works: books, films, journals, musical compositions, and so on: We saw a performance of the Messiah on Saturday.
Italic font, or italics, is a style of typeface in which the text appears slanted, like this. While italics are mainly used to draw attention to certain words or passages, the font also plays an important role in differentiating the titles and names of thingssuch as novels, movies, and even spaceshipsfrom other text.
A vector can be described using i,j notation. A unit vector is a vector of length 1, in Cartesian co-ordinates the unit vectors along the axis are denoted by i and j respectively. Any two-dimensional vector can be written in the form ai+bj a i + b j .
Variables represented by abbreviations of more than one letter should be upright, for example S.D. for standard deviation. Two-letter symbols defining dimensionless groups should be italic, for example: Re Reynolds number.
