How do you know when to italicize? Italics are used for emphasissparinglywhen the structure of the sentence itself doesnt already convey this. Some writers mistakenly italicize any and all titles, but only book-length titles get this honor.
Using Italics for Foreign Words and Phrases Italicize such foreign words and phrases as terra incognita, in vivo, and inter alia; however, if the word or phrase is commonly used in your field (e.g., in situ, et al., ad hoc, ab initio), you may omit the italics.
Get your Latin Right in vitro and in vivo should never be hyphenated or italicised. Nor should in situ or ex situ. In fact, Latin should never be italicised! et al. should always be followed by a full stop, and only a comma if the sentence needs one anyway.
