If we want to apply italics to many annotations in our plot, bquote() and as. expression() are the way to go. For example, this is useful when the row labels of a heatmap show gene names, which we can italicize easily with just a bit of code. Our function basically wrapped the gene names, the strings, with italic().
Markdown makes it especially easy to create bold and italicized text. Only asterisks are required to this end. To write in italics, add an asterisk before and after the word or words. For bold text, use two asterisks and if you want a text to be both bold and italicized, three asterisks are necessary.
To make the formatted text into italic type, you can simply use a pair of * around the text with no space. For example *italic* in the . Rmd file generates italic in the output document. To make the formatted text into bold type, you can simply use a pair of ** around the marked up text with no space.
Markdown treats asterisks (*) and underscores () as indicators of emphasis. Text wrapped with one * or will be wrapped with an HTML tag (italics); double *s or s will be wrapped with an HTML tag (bold).
Markdown provides simple tags to format text for emphasis as well as super- and subscripting: *italics* produces italics. **bold** produces bold. ~~strikethrough~~ produces strikethrough. `code` produces code. text^super^ produces text. super text~sub~ produces text. sub
For readability, avoid using italics for emphasis in running text as much as possible. Use italics instead of underlining for book titles in running text. Do not use italics in headlines or course titles.
