Press the CTRL and I keys on your keyboard at the same time to enable italics in Windows.
Type Italic in cell B4. Click on the check mark located on the Formula bar. Hold down the Ctrl key while pressing i (Ctrl-i). Press Ctrl-i again if you wish to remove the italic formatting.
Superscripts and subscripts are in italic type if they represent variables, quantities, or running numbers. They are in roman type if they are descriptive. Abbreviations in subscripts and superscripts fall into two categories: (1) single-letter and (2) multiletter abbreviations.
There is a comprehensive standard but as a rule of thumb remember this: any italicized letter is a variable. So, none of the dimensionless numbers, none of the superscripts or subscripts that are not variable and none of the functions names.
First, note that while variables and numbers should be italicized, the following elements of equations should be set in roman type: function names, units, words, and abbreviations thereof.
Mathematical parameters should be written in italics, (not only in the equation itself but everywhere in the thesis), but not units, numbers and mathematical functions like logarithms. Use the same font size for mathematical expressions as the font size of the text.
Functions. Names for standard functions, such as sin and cos, are not in italic font, but we use italic names such as f for functions in other cases; for example when we define the function as in f(x) = sin(x) cos(x) .
