It is common practice in scientific journals to print genus and species names in italics. This is not only historical as species names were traditionally derived from Greek or Latin. Importantly, it also facilitates the rapid recognition of genus and species names when skimming through manuscripts.
Biological names are generally in Latin so they are written in italics. They are Latinised or derived from Latin irrespective of their origin. Both the words when handwritten are underlined separately or printed in italics to indicate their Latin origin.
Italicize family, genus, species, and variety or subspecies. Begin family and genus with a capital letter. Kingdom, phylum, class, order, and suborder begin with a capital letter but are not italicized.
The scientific names of species are italicized. The genus name is always capitalized and is written first; the specific epithet follows the genus name and is not capitalized. There is no exception to this.
2. Conventionally, the two words are underlined when handwritten or typed, to indicate to an editor or printing company that they should be italicised when they are printed on a printing press. One reason for putting them into italics is to indicate that they are not English -- they are Latin.
As mentioned, binomial scientific names should always be italicized, but any category above the level of genus is typically written in roman (i.e., non-italicized) text. The exceptions are bacteria, fungi, and viruses; for these taxa, italics are also used at the family level.
