Italicize titles of journals, magazines and newspapers. Do not italicize or use quotation marks for the titles of articles.
Do not italicize the titles of articles or book chapters. Capitalize only the first letter of the first word of the article title. If there is a colon in the article title, also capitalize the first letter of the first word after the colon. Dont include the format, platform, or device (e.g. Kindle) in the reference.
Every figure must have a caption. Number figures sequentially using Arabic numerals in order of discussion in the document and parts of a figure are typically indicated with a number and letter (Figure 4a). Captions include figure number and a brief, informative description preferably in non-sentence format.
Journal article, chapter in an edited book - sentence style, no italics. No title - include a short description of the work in square brackets. Edited book chapters: write In followed by the initials of the editors (not inverted), followed with (Ed.) or (Eds.) then the book title (in italics) and the publisher.
Use italics for titles of books, newspapers, magazines, and journals. Italicize the volume number for journal citations. Put the year the work was published in parentheses. If no date is available, write (n.d).
Hyphenated names If last names are hyphenated, keep that formatting in citations and references. When given names are hyphenated, retain the hyphen and include a period after each initial by no space (e.g., Xu, A.
In short, a title you would italicize within the body of a paper will also be italicized on a reference page. However, a title youd place in quotation marks within the body of the paper (such as the title of an article within a journal) will be written without italics and quotation marks on the references page.
ACS Writing Style General Formatting Guidelines The font for the paper must be consistent. Maintain a 12-point Times New Roman font. Double Space the entire research paper, including quotations, notes, and the list of works cited. Use a hanging indent to create proper spacing of 0.5 for your reference list page.
