When using the spoken language, it is always an option to express oneself in regular words, with normal sentences. But the Italian language has a long list of interjections and exclamations that can be used to express emotions in a very colorful and spontaneous way. Exclamations are invariable words that can be scattered here and there when speaking just like little spices. They dont change the meaning of the sentence, but they describe a particular emotional status in a more garish and original way. Some of these are words created with this specific purpose alone, and are therefore called proper interjections. These are often onomatopoeic, meaning the word is derived from the sound it is describing. An example would be one of our favorite words from a previous tutorial, boh? Then we have improper interjections, which are actually made of already existing parts of speech which are normally used for other purposes, but are instead used to express joy, anger, dismay, or other emotions.

If the exclamation mark is not part of a sentence-ending title, dont italicize the exclamation mark: Ive asked you not to sing la Marseillaise! In academic prose, an exclamation point is used rarely, if at all, and in newspaper writing the exclamation point is virtually nonexistent.
An exclamation mark, usually in parentheses (italicized in square brackets in quoted material), is sometimes used to indicate incredulity on the part of the writer. As with the analogous use of the question mark, this is a technique easily overdone: Mr.
If the punctuation is part of the content of the sentence, yes. For example, Yes, you will! and Wont he? have the exclamation point and question mark italicized along with the text. With a period, it doesnt matter.
Nobody applies italics in speech unless theyre air italics meant to imply sarcasm. Whether something is in quoted dialogue has no bearing on whether appropriate treatment should be applied to a book or film title. Yes, of course it should be italicized.
This follows what the Chicago Manual (6.4) calls a more traditional system . . . once preferred by Chicago and still preferred by some as more aesthetically pleasing, but the current standard is that punctuation after an italicized term should not be italicized unless its part of the term itself.
Similar to a question mark, when a quote has an exclamation mark, the quotation marks should go after the exclamation point. If the sentence does have an exclamation point, but the quote does not, then the exclamation point goes outside of the quotation marks. Examples: Yes, I will marry you!
The MLA Style Center In its publications, the MLAs preference is not to italicize commas that appear after italicized elements.
An exclamation point is used after a word group or sentence in order to emphasize a point or to express strong emotion or surprise. Use of the exclamation point is optional for the writer. It is one of the few ways that a writer can indicate how words may sound when spoken.
