Chemical formulas do not adopt an italicized format in professional, scientific journals. Sending a manuscript out with such a style would result in reviewer comments stating that it must be fixed.
Variables represented by abbreviations of more than one letter should be upright, for example S.D. for standard deviation. Two-letter symbols defining dimensionless groups should be italic, for example: Re Reynolds number.
The names of elements and other chemicals should be written without abbreviations and treated as common nouns. They do not have special capitalization or italic formatting (see MOS:CAPS and MOS:ITALIC) regardless of the origin of the name unless appropriate for the start of a sentence or part of a title.
If the exclamation mark is not part of a sentence-ending title, dont italicize the exclamation mark: Ive asked you not to sing la Marseillaise! In academic prose, an exclamation point is used rarely, if at all, and in newspaper writing the exclamation point is virtually nonexistent.
Generally, these should be written as their chemical formula rather than spelling out their name. The exception is when the formula is particularly complicated or the reagent/solvent has a common name that is shorter or more precise. For example, we could write H2SO4 rather than sulfuric acid, but either is fine.
Character Thoughts or Internal Monologue: One of the primary uses of italics in screenplays is to indicate a characters thoughts or internal monologue.
Letter symbols for elements are italic when they are locants in chemical-compound names indicating attachments to heteroatoms, e.g. O-, N-, S-, and P-. The italic element symbol H denotes indicated or added hydrogen.
Use italics when citing the scientific (Latin) name of a living species (binomial nomenclature): bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis)
