When you italicize your writing, you print or type in the slanted letters called italics. You can italicize a word in a sentence when you want to emphasize it. People italicize for various reasons: they might italicize the title of a book, or a section of dialogue thats yelled by a character in a story.
To bold the selected text, press the Ctrl key and the B key simultaneously on your keyboard. To put the selected text in italics, press the Ctrl + I keys. To underline the selected text, press Ctrl + U keys.
Titles that should not be italicized are those of religious texts. The Bible is not italicized, nor are the titles of the books within it. Shorter titles, such as short stories from an anthology, journal articles, and episodes of television shows, cannot stand alone and thus should not be italicized.
If italics are added to a quoted passage for emphasis, the passage must be followed by (emphasis mine) or (emphasis added). The author does not need to indicate (emphasis in original) when italics appear in the original extract.
7 Rules For Italics Emphasis. Want a word or phrase to stand out in a block of text? Titles Of Work. The titles of works should be italicized (or underlined). Articles. Foreign Words. Names Of Trains, Ships, Spaceships. Words As Reproduced Sounds. Words As Words.
Common Latin (or other) abbreviations or words should not be italicized, including cf., e.g., ad hoc, i.e., per se, inter alia, vis--vis and de facto. 5.
Most commonly, italics are used for emphasis or contrast that is, to draw attention to some particular part of a text. Here are some examples: The Battle of New Orleans was fought in January 1815, two weeks after the peace treaty had been signed.
What is the purpose of italics? Italics are used primarily to denote titles and names of particular works or objects in order to allow that title or name to stand out from the surrounding sentence. Italics may also be used for emphasis in writing, but only rarely.
