7 Rules For Italics Emphasis. Want a word or phrase to stand out in a block of text? Titles Of Work. The titles of works should be italicized (or underlined). Articles. Foreign Words. Names Of Trains, Ships, Spaceships. Words As Reproduced Sounds. Words As Words.
Reserve quotation marks for speech alone. (This is the most popular option.) Dont use quotation marks for speech or thought. If desired, apply italics to thought.
Knowing how to write thoughts in first person is fairly easy. The writer uses I as the pronoun for actions, words, and thoughts. The narrative view is limited to one character, which means we can only know the thoughts of that character. You will use I within the inner dialogue.
Its quite fine to not italicize those small internal utterances in your first-person narrative. Clarity is the ultimate goal, and I dont anticipate readers being confused in this situation.
(The first person singular is I, the first person plural is we.) Example: I lied, Charles thought, but maybe she will forgive me. Notice that quotation marks and other punctuation are used as if the character had spoken aloud. You may also use italics without quotation marks for direct internal dialogue.
To make the selected characters italic, select Ctrl+I. The characters are displayed in italic type. In writing for customers, use regular type to describe type thats neither bold nor italic.
If youre writing fiction, you may style a characters thoughts in italics or quotation marks. Using italics has the advantage of distinguishing thoughts from speech.
If youre writing in third person limited and the thought is in first person, italics are the better choice. Same for novels written in past tense that offer present-tense thoughts. Either formatting option can work for a novel in third or first person with everything in the same tense.
