At last we come to the final part of the language creation process: creating a writing system. First of all, and most importantly, do you really need your writing system? Many languages around the world simply never developed writing as a technology. This is a perfectly valid option for your speakers if theyamp;#39;re a preliterate society or otherwise wouldnamp;#39;t realistically discover writing technologies. Another equally viable option is that, rather than inventing writing themselves, your speakers borrowed a writing system from a different language. There are lots of fun spins you can pull on this concept, especially if the two languages have radically different phonemic inventories. Using Italics for Foreign Words and Phrases Italicize such foreign words and phrases as terra incognita, in vivo, and inter alia; however, if the word or phrase is commonly used in your field (e.g., in situ, et al., ad hoc, ab initio), you may omit the italics.
Get your Latin Right in vitro and in vivo should never be hyphenated or italicised. Nor should in situ or ex situ. In fact, Latin should never be italicised! et al. should always be followed by a full stop, and only a comma if the sentence needs one anyway.
CBE considers whether a Latin word is common and suggests that in vitro and in vivo not be italicized. This, then, becomes a style point.
Titles of books, plays, films, periodicals, databases, and websites are italicized. Place titles in quotation marks if the source is part of a larger work. Articles, essays, chapters, poems, webpages, songs, and speeches are placed in quotation marks.
What is the purpose of italics? Italics are used primarily to denote titles and names of particular works or objects in order to allow that title or name to stand out from the surrounding sentence. Italics may also be used for emphasis in writing, but only rarely.
Scientific and technical terms Some aspects of technical and scientific writing require italics, as do physical quantities or mathematical constants. Examples include species names such as Homo sapiens, and the constant c (the speed of light).
for et alii) or spelt out (in vitro, in vivo, in situ). Should they be set in italics? As is common with such queries, there is no single right or wrong answer, although, increasingly, the trend is to dispense with italics. Most publishers and style guides instruct authors not to use italics for such phrases.
For our most common purposes, use italics for genus/species names, genes, loci, and alleles; parts of chemical names as appropriate (including cis, trans, ortho, meta, and para); all variables (e.g., probability (P or p)); and written-out Latin forms (such as a priori, ad libitum, de novo, in situ, in utero, in vitro,
