I might recommend doing the flashbacks in italics. Though youd have to play around and see how it looks- too long and it could make your readers eyes tired. Using a scene separator as suggested above would also be a good way to do this.
No, typically you dont italicize article titles. Instead, you may enclose article titles in double quotation marks (MLA 9: Article Title) or simply use regular font without quotation marks (APA 7: Article title).
When should italics not be used? Italics should not be used for the titles of short works, such as poems, articles, short stories, or song namesall of which use quotation marks instead. The names of geographic locations and religious texts use neither italics nor quotes, but theyre still capitalized.
Italicize titles if the source is self-contained and independent. Titles of books, plays, films, periodicals, databases, and websites are italicized. Place titles in quotation marks if the source is part of a larger work. Articles, essays, chapters, poems, webpages, songs, and speeches are placed in quotation marks.
We use italics instead of quotation marks so the reader wont mistake it for something being spoken aloud at the moment. But the rest of the characters memory does not need to be in italics, because its interior monologue. It could be italicized, but it doesnt have to be.
Generally, you shouldnt need to write your flashbacks in different font styles because there will already be enough clues in the text. However, you might consider using italics for any in-flashback dialogue, instead of quotation marks.
Italics and quotation marks are used to draw attention to text. For example, italics are used to draw attention to key terms and phrases when providing definitions and to format parts of reference list entries (e.g., titles of books and periodicals).
Sometimes, flashbacks are written in present tense to bring home how vivid the memory feels, but even then, its a good idea to use past or past perfect verbs to immerse the reader before shifting into it.
