Functions. Names for standard functions, such as sin and cos, are not in italic font, but we use italic names such as f for functions in other cases; for example when we define the function as in f(x) = sin(x) cos(x) .
Italic Versus Nonitalic Variables are italicized. Superscript numbers are not italicized (e.g., R2). Identifiers (which can be superscript or subscript words, letters, or numbers) are not italicized.
Mathematical operators such as sin, log, or Cov should always be set roman. Pay particular attention to common but not predefined operators, such as supp, conv, ri, int, and sgn, keeping them in normal font. Try to use alternative ways for simplifying notation requiring multiple levels of sub- and superscripts.
There is a comprehensive standard but as a rule of thumb remember this: any italicized letter is a variable. So, none of the dimensionless numbers, none of the superscripts or subscripts that are not variable and none of the functions names.
Use italics for words being defined or words, letters, or numbers being named as words or used as examples.
First, note that while variables and numbers should be italicized, the following elements of equations should be set in roman type: function names, units, words, and abbreviations thereof.
Variables represented by abbreviations of more than one letter should be upright, for example S.D. for standard deviation. Two-letter symbols defining dimensionless groups should be italic, for example: Re Reynolds number.
7 Rules For Italics Emphasis. Want a word or phrase to stand out in a block of text? Titles Of Work. The titles of works should be italicized (or underlined). Articles. Foreign Words. Names Of Trains, Ships, Spaceships. Words As Reproduced Sounds. Words As Words.
