The Italic languages form a branch of the Indo-European language family, whose earliest known members were spoken on the Italian Peninsula in the first millennium BC.
In the main sense, Italic people were inhabitants of Italy who spoke the Osco-Umbrian languages and Latino-Faliscan languages. In a narrower sense, Italic peoples include Ligures, Rhaetian people and people of the Etruscan civilization.
The Italian language first started to diverge from Latin in the 5th century after the fall of the Roman Empire. However, this was a slow process! It wasnt until around the 10th century that texts were written in the Italian language, gradually becoming more popular through the use of Italian in literature and poetry.
The earliest known use of the word Italic is in the mid 1500s. OEDs earliest evidence for Italic is from 1563, in the writing of John Shute, writer on architecture. Etymons: Latin Italicus.
The name comes from the fact that calligraphy-inspired typefaces were first designed in Italy, to replace documents traditionally written in a handwriting style called chancery hand.
