Starting where we left off in the last video, the top row of letters A through J, is also used to represent numbers 1 through 9, plus 0. This is done by adding a special character before the letters, to let you know to read them as numbers. 7 Rules For Italics Emphasis. Want a word or phrase to stand out in a block of text? Titles Of Work. The titles of works should be italicized (or underlined). Articles. Foreign Words. Names Of Trains, Ships, Spaceships. Words As Reproduced Sounds. Words As Words.
The following families of symbols must always be typeset in roman characters: units, such as g, cm, s, keV. Note that physical constants are usually in italics, so units involving constants are mixed roman-italics, e.g., GeV/c (with the c in italic because it symbolizes the speed of light, a constant);
The overall rule is that symbols representing physical quantities (or variables) are italic, but symbols representing units, or labels, are roman.
Foreign words and abbreviations (versus, vs.; et cetera, etc.) that are accepted universally into the English language may be used without explanation. However, if a foreign word or abbreviation is not universally understood, place it in italics and provide an explanation.
Italicize letters designating unknown quantities and constants, lines, etc. , in algebraic, geometric and similar matter: Let n be the number of molecules 5x a2 2ab.
Mathematical operators such as sin, log, or Cov should always be set roman. Pay particular attention to common but not predefined operators, such as supp, conv, ri, int, and sgn, keeping them in normal font. Try to use alternative ways for simplifying notation requiring multiple levels of sub- and superscripts.
When should italics not be used? Italics should not be used for the titles of short works, such as poems, articles, short stories, or song namesall of which use quotation marks instead. The names of geographic locations and religious texts use neither italics nor quotes, but theyre still capitalized.
