As pre-teens enter into puberty and grow taller and heavier, their risk of ACL injury increases beginning at age 12 for girls, and age 14 for boys. Girls are at higher risk of ACL injury because after puberty, as their body size increases, girls do usually not develop more muscle power.
There is no upper age limit to an ACL reconstruction because it is mainly dependent upon the patients activity levels, other medical problems, and if they have instability.
ACL tears are most common between the ages of 15 and 45, mostly due to the more active lifestyle and higher participation in sports.
You may be able to fully heal with less invasive options, like physical therapy and knee bracing, but your knee might still need more gentle treatment after you recover if you dont opt for surgical repair. Many patients prefer to skip surgical treatment and work on adapting, especially after the age of 40.
ACL tears are common and repairable in young athletes. However, ACL injuries can also become a problem for older patients. At the Center for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine of Tomball and Kingwood, Texas, specialist Michael L. Blackwell, MD, and his team effectively treat ACL injuries in patients of all ages.
Age and ACL Surgery Outcomes Research suggests that timely ACL reconstruction in younger patients may yield favorable outcomes, with a focus on restoring knee stability and preventing secondary damage to the menisci and articular cartilage.
Grade one: The injury stretched your ACL enough to damage it, but its still in one piece and holding your knee bones together. Grade two: The injury stretched your ACL so much that it was partially torn and loosened. Grade three: A complete tear your ACL is in two pieces.
The decision to have knee surgery will depend on the extent of damage to your anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), if there is other knee damage and if your quality of life is affected. If your knee feels stable and you do not have an active lifestyle, you may decide not to have ACL surgery.
