The two most common forms of references in legal writing are in-text references and footnotes. The main difference between them is that in-text references are usually included in the text itself while footnotes are given at the bottom of the page.
While the content in footnotes and endnotes can look the same, they serve different functions. Footnotes are used as a citation vehicle for a short citation, while endnotes can contain more text without compromising the format of the paper.
Footnotes appear at the bottom of the page and endnotes come at the end of the document. A number or symbol on the footnote or endnote matches up with a reference mark in the document.
Footnotes appear on the bottom of the page that contains the sentence to which it refers. Endnotes are listed at the end of the paper on separate pages. On the top of the first page, the title Notes is centered one inch from the top of the page. Endnote pages are placed before the bibliography.
Create a hyperlink from the Footnote to the Source. To do this, click INSERT, then HYPERLINK, then PLACE IN THIS DOCUMENT, then select the correct BOOKMARK in the source (NumberS).
If citations are consistently placed in notes, then a repeated citation would require a new note. Note numbers are not reused in an essay in MLA style; instead, notes are numbered consecutively, as recommended by The Chicago Manual of Style (Sequencing of Note Numbers).

The pinpoint reference should not be repeated. If you refer to the same source as in the immediately preceding footnote but to a different page or section, use ibid followed by the pinpoint reference, that is, the different page or section number.
docHubner has tools for all of these needs. You can include inline annotations, which are visible in the text of your project; comments, which are visible in the Inspector; and footnotes or endnotes, that appear in the appropriate locations when you compile your project.
Use of ibid. Ibid. (the abbreviation for ibidem, meaning in the same place) refers to the work cited in the preceding footnote or to the preceding work within the same footnote.
