Touch And Feel Letters First, introduce the letter to your child. Trace or make the letter in whatever material you choose. Next, establish an association for your child. Ask your child to follow along while you draw the letter. Once your child has mastered following along with you, you can engage their recall skills.
By consistently repeating the same letter sounds to them, you can help your child more easily pick up on them. A great idea might be to focus on introducing your child to one letter sound at a time. You could make a letter of the week jar for your child.
Scoring and Prompts Write the students response for errors. Mark the sound the student said between slashes (e.g.,/m/). If the student tells you the letter name instead of the letter sounds, say: Thats the letter name. What is the letter sounds? If the student responds with the correct answer, mark a check.
Instead, teach the letters in order of how frequently they appear easily decodable words. Letters like s, t, r, m, n, a, o, and p should be taught first. These are high-frequency letters and emphasis on these letters first will allow children to quickly start reading simple words.

Letter Matching and Sorting Draw a letter on a small whiteboard and have the student find the letter that matches. Memory Use alphabet cards they are still working on to create a memory game. Is/Isnt Have students sort letters into 2 piles. Uppercase/ Lowercase match. Letter to beginning sound picture match.
Scoring: Place a check mark in the column if the child identifies the letter or sound correctly. Record any letter or sound the child names incorrectly in the boxes. Count the checks (correct letters or sounds) and total them onto the score sheet.

Why is letter-sound knowledge important? Letter-sound knowledge (also called graphemic knowledge) helps students to decode written language and teach themselves new words, since students can use letter-sound patterns to say the word, even if it is unfamiliar to them.
Thats why in Montessori classrooms, we introduce lower-case letters first, and introduce capitals only later. Children in Montessori learn to associate letter sounds with letter shapes using a material called the Montessori Sandpaper Letters.
