The zip code is written at the end of the address, typically after the City and State. A zip code is always 5 digits. Zip+4 adds four digits to the five digits, and is not needed for a complete address. Zip codes are the postal code used by the US Postal Service.
ZIP Codes are numbered with the first digit representing a certain group of U.S. states, the second and third digits together representing a region in that group (or perhaps a large city) and the fourth and fifth digits representing a group of delivery addresses within that region.
Census tracts are polygons and cover a well-defined geographic area. ZIP codes are clusters of lines; the U.S. Postal Service does not define ZIP Code boundaries. A very large number of 5-digit ZIP Codes are P.O. boxes or specific street addresses and thus represent points not even one line.
In the US, postal codes are called ZIP codes, and they are composed of five digits. The first digit represents a geographical region, and the following two digits represent a sectional center within that region. The last two digits indicate a specific post office or delivery area.
What is a zip code? The first digit: this number refers to the national area, or defined group of states. The second and third digit: this set of numbers signifies a region within this group, such as a large city. The fourth and fifth digit: these numbers represent the associate post office or delivery area of a region.
The five-digit code which initially specified an area or a part of a town was no longer accurate or efficient enough. So, USPS created 9-digit ZIP Codes to ensure fast and accurate mailings. They indicate the actual path the mail should travel and usually they narrow down to somewhere between ten to twenty homes.
Zip Codes should be in the last line of an address, after the name of the post office (usually the same as the town or city) and the two letters that represent the state or territory. USPS suggests that all letters in the address be upper case and no punctuation.
ZIP Codes are lines; not shapes For example: 42223 spans Christian County, Kentucky, and Montgomery County, Tennessee. 97635 includes portions of Lake County, Oregon, and Modoc County, California. 51023 and 51001 are in both Iowa and Nebraska.
