You can do several things to stop your 401(k) from losing money. First, make sure youre diversified by investing in various companies and industries. Second, try to time the market by selling when the market is down and buying when its up. Finally, consider switching to a different 401(k) plan with lower fees.

Stable value funds are an excellent choice for conservative investors and those with relatively short time horizons, such as workers nearing retirement. These funds will provide income with minimal risk and can serve to stabilize the rest of the investors portfolio to some extent.
The safest place to put your retirement funds is in low-risk investments and savings options with guaranteed growth. Low-risk investments and savings options include fixed annuities, savings accounts, CDs, treasury securities, and money market accounts. Of these, fixed annuities usually provide the best interest rates.
Use Balanced Funds for a Middle-of-the-Road Approach A balanced fund allocates your 401(k) contributions across both stocks and bonds, usually in a proportion of about 60% stocks and 40% bonds. The fund is said to be balanced because the more conservative bonds minimize the risk of the stocks.
Mutual funds are the most common investment option offered in 401(k) plans, though some are starting to offer exchange-traded funds (ETFs). 1 Both mutual funds and ETFs contain a basket of securities such as equities. Mutual funds range from conservative to aggressive, with plenty of grades in between.
