If you are sick, use your sick leave before retiring. If you are far from retirement, remember that your sick leave is your short-term disability insurance. Financially, sick leave is worth more to use it than to add it to your retirement.
To compute the additional credit for sick leave at retirement, add the months and days of sick leave to the months and days of all periods of actual service. Only years and full months of service are used in the annuity computation. Odd days are dropped. In the example, the 10 days would be dropped.
A lump-sum payment will be equal to the total pay the employee would have received had the employee remained in federal service until the expiration of the period included in the total amount of unused annual leave hours.
Unused comp time A: Compensatory time must be used within 26 pay periods. If you retire and have any compensatory time remaining, it will be paid at the hourly overtime rate in effect when you earned it. Such a payment is not affected by any lump sum payment for unused annual leave to which you may be entitled.
An employee is entitled to use sick leave when he or she: receives medical, dental, or optical examination or treatment; is incapacitated for the performance of duties by physical or mental illness, injury, pregnancy, or childbirth; or.
Most commonly, employees earn one hour of sick time for every 30 hours worked. Paid sick time laws generally allow employers to limit the amount of sick time that employees can earn or use in a year, typically to around 40 hours per year.
If you retire with any unused sick leave it is converted into creditable service for your pension calculation. For CSRS folks, each month of sick leave counts as 1/6th of 1%. This comes out to 2% for an entire years worth of sick leave.
A year of sick leave (2087 hours) effectively adds around 1% to the pension income of either a federal retiree or a survivor receiving a FERS pension, and 2% for a CSRS pension. If you retire under CSRS, or leave a survivor a CSRS annuity, 100% of unused sick leave can be credited toward the income calculation.
Except for unexpected illness or injury situations, sick leave must be requested on PS Form 3971 and approved in advance by the appropriate supervisor.
