Youll need an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number from the IRS its called ITIN for short If you have a tax filing requirement, federal tax withholding or are eligible for an allowable tax benefit, but you arent eligible for a Social Security number. Go to irs.gov/itin, where you can learn more about it. First, youll complete a Form W-7. Youll mail this to the IRS along with the required identification documents and your federal tax return. Check out the instructions for Form W-7 for a list of acceptable documents. Only send original identification documents or a copy certified by the agency that issued it. You also have other options. An EIN is a type of TIN but not vice versa: Think of the TIN as a parent and the EIN as a child. So, a TIN is required for filing taxes or claiming certain benefits. Whether you use a SSN, EIN or ITIN will come down to the circumstances.
You can file Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), with your federal income tax return. You must also include original documentation or certified copies from the issuing agency to prove identity and foreign status.
Applying for an EIN for your Maryland LLC is completely free. The IRS doesnt charge any service fees for the EIN online application.
An EIN is required for LLCs that will have employees. Additionally, most banks require an EIN in order to open a business bank account. State tax identification number. Maryland requires a state tax identification number.
You can apply for a FEIN online or download the form through the IRS website, or can call them at 1-800-829-4933. Remember, you must have a Maryland SDAT Identification Number in order to apply for a Federal Employer Identification Number. Once approved, your FEIN will be a nine-digit number.

Therefore, you can use a TIN in place of an EIN. However, you cannot use an EIN in place of a TIN. Another difference between these two numbers is that the TIN can be received immediately after verification is complete at no cost, while an EIN needs time as state guidelines have to be checked before it is issued.
