To type the ^A first press Ctrl-V, then press Ctrl-A. You can then use Ctrl-A to append at the end of the file when not in insert or visual mode.

Its relatively simple: Open a new or existing file with vim filename . Type i to switch into insert mode so that you can start editing the file. Enter or modify the text with your file.
