There are three basic types of profit sharing plans: traditional, age-weighted and new comparability.
Profit sharing is various incentive plans introduced by businesses that provide direct or indirect payments to employees that depend on companys profitability in addition to employees regular salary and bonuses. In publicly traded companies these plans typically amount to allocation of shares to employees.
A profit-sharing plan is a retirement plan that allows an employer or company owner to share the profits in the business, up to 25 percent of the companys payroll, with the firms employees.
Businesses sharing profits with employees typically do so in cash, payments to retirement plans or by issuing company stocks or bonds. These performance-based employee incentives are usually paid in addition to bonuses and regular salaries.
If the business owner shares 10% of the annual profits and the business earns $100,000 in a fiscal year, the company would allocate profit share as follows: Employee A = ($100,000 X 0.10) X ($50,000 / $150,000), or $3,333.33.

Unlike a 401(k), only the employer contributes to a profit-sharing plan. The IRS stated, If a salary deferral feature is added to a profit-sharing plan, it is a 401(k) plan. Additionally, when you begin a profit-sharing plan (and annually thereafter), you must file IRS Form 5500.
