The first thing you need to do is think of an attention-grabbing headline and format it in bold, capitalizing the first letter and any proper nouns. Start off your first paragraph with the city youre in, the date, and some sort of attention-grabbing first line, also known as the grabber. The release should be written as youd like to see it appear in print. Make the journalists job as easy as possible, providing clearly the who, what, when, where, why, and how. Theyre very busy. Theyll appreciate it. If theres a quote you can use, include it in the press release. This is a great way to add a personal touch and make the story come to life. When citing a press release for an event, youll always include the following elements: the author, title, date of publication, and source (in other words, where you found the press release). However, your citations will vary slightly depending on what style of formatting you use.
To cite a press release in APA Style, list the organization responsible, the date of publication, the title in italics, Press release in square brackets, and the URL.
Headline: An effective press release must have an eye catching headline. Dateline: An effective press release should contain dateline in the first line of the first paragraph of the content. Introduction: Body: Boilerplate: Call To Action: Media Contact Details:
Format the footnotes by placing the title of the reference cited first, in quotes, with a comma, followed by source with a comma and date, page number, and ending with a period. Include the full URL address if appropriate. (For example, Man Bites Dog, Canine Times, May 8, 2008, C6.)
If you cite data, include a reference link for the data source, and make sure every name in the release has an associated title and company as well. To keep yourself honest on this front, ask a colleague to read the release without context and ask them to relay the information back to you.
What is a media kit? Help answer questions before they are asked. Provide facts and information about your cause. Introduce your organization and other initiatives. Lay the foundation to pitch a news story. Position your organization as the subject matter expert. Provide quotes and bios for speakers.
Have a Good Hook. A well-written nonprofit press release needs to start with a strong opening sentence. Tell A Story. Every good nonprofit press release is, in its own way, a story. Keep It Simple. Keep It Social and Shareable. Add to Your Story. Build Relationships with Journalists. 5 Ws and 1 H. The Inverted Triangle.
A press release is an official statement delivered to members of the news media for the purpose of providing information, creating an official statement, or making an announcement directed for public release. Press releases are also considered a primary source, meaning they are original informants for information.
