First, enable Developer Mode by navigating to File, then Options, and customizing the ribbon to include Developer. Once Developer Mode is activated, click on it to find the checkbox option, which allows you to insert a checkbox into your document. To change the appearance of the checkbox to a check mark or other symbols, select the checkbox, go to Developer Properties, and adjust the checked symbol as desired (e.g., using a happy or sad face). After making changes, clicking the checkbox will reflect the selected symbols.
