For example, a single record would include a persons first and last names, address, phone number, and date of birth. A merge field is where you want to insert the information from a data source into a main document. Merge fields appear with chevrons ( ) around them. An example would be: Dear FirstName.
By default, field codes are hidden from view. But with the keyboard shortcut Alt+F9, you can toggle between viewing the field codes and their results. In most cases, you never have to deal with field codes, because Word adds them automatically when you click commands, such as Insert Merge Field and Greeting line.

MergeField is a Field element containing a reference to a data field by its name. When a template document is mail merged with the values from a data source, the data field information replaces the merge field.
From the Insert tab on the Ribbon, in the Text group, select Quick Parts and then select Field . In the Field dialog box, from the Field names list, select the field. You can filter this list by selecting Categories . Customize the field by selecting any properties options you desire and then click OK to insert it.
