Many people are told that a 70 percent blockage of the coronary artery will require a stent, but ultimately, it depends on the individual, their current health status, and the likelihood that the stent will improve the overall quality of life.
A coronary artery stent is a small, metal mesh tube that is placed inside a coronary artery to help keep the artery open. To place the stent, a small sheath, plastic tube, is placed in the groin or wrist artery. A catheter is guided through the artery into the part of the coronary artery that is blocked.
A heart cath is the main test youll have to do. Its a procedure where you have to go into the body, into the heart, put in a catheter and do the angiogram test. We use a dye that helps you visualize the blocked artery. Thats when do you determine whether they need a stent or not, said Dr.
Serious complications rarely happen during stent placement. People with heart failure, diabetes, kidney disease or a previous artery blockage have a higher risk of serious complications. Risks include: A blood clot inside your stent, especially if you abruptly stop taking your medicines that protect the stent.
Speak with your doctor to see if angioplasty with stenting may be appropriate for you if you experience symptoms like these: Chest pain (angina) that worsens when you engage in physical activities. Shortness of breath that accompanies physical activity.
A stent is often placed during or immediately after angioplasty. It helps prevent the artery from closing up again. A drug-eluting stent has medicine embedded in it that helps prevent the artery from closing in the long term.
When the walls are weak, the force of the blood pushing through can cause an aneurysm or balloon-like bulge in the aorta. The stent graft supports the weak area of the aorta and helps to prevent the aneurysm from bursting or tearing the wall of the artery (dissection).
