A stent is often placed during or immediately after angioplasty. It helps prevent the artery from closing up again. A drug-eluting stent has medicine embedded in it that helps prevent the artery from closing in the long term.
Serious complications rarely happen during stent placement. People with heart failure, diabetes, kidney disease or a previous artery blockage have a higher risk of serious complications. Risks include: A blood clot inside your stent, especially if you abruptly stop taking your medicines that protect the stent.
What to expect during a stent placement procedure. In most cases, general anesthesia is not needed for stent placement. You will be given medication to relax and a local anesthetic for the incision site. You may feel pressure during insertion but should not feel pain or feel the catheter being threaded to the heart.
Stent placement usually takes 30 minutes to two hours, but the preparation and recovery time may add several hours. This procedure is usually performed in the cardiac catheterization laboratory.
When the walls are weak, the force of the blood pushing through can cause an aneurysm or balloon-like bulge in the aorta. The stent graft supports the weak area of the aorta and helps to prevent the aneurysm from bursting or tearing the wall of the artery (dissection).
Stenting is a minimally invasive procedure, meaning it does not require a large, open incision in the body and is not considered major surgery. However, before you get a stent, you may need certain tests or some medicines to prepare for the procedure.
A coronary artery stent is a small, metal mesh tube that is placed inside a coronary artery to help keep the artery open. To place the stent, a small sheath, plastic tube, is placed in the groin or wrist artery. A catheter is guided through the artery into the part of the coronary artery that is blocked.
You get medicines to help you relax. The amount of sedation needed for coronary angioplasty and stenting depends on your health conditions and why youre having the procedure. Usually you are awake during angioplasty. But some people may need a combinations of medicines that puts them to sleep during the procedure.
