Stenting is a minimally invasive procedure, meaning it does not require a large, open incision in the body and is not considered major surgery. However, before you get a stent, you may need certain tests or some medicines to prepare for the procedure.
You get medicines to help you relax. The amount of sedation needed for coronary angioplasty and stenting depends on your health conditions and why youre having the procedure. Usually you are awake during angioplasty. But some people may need a combinations of medicines that puts them to sleep during the procedure.
The stent is inserted along with a balloon catheter and expands when the balloon is inflated. The stent is then left there to help keep the artery open. If you have a blocked artery in your heart, legs, or neck, you may need a stent to keep your blood flowing to prevent serious problems.
Serious complications rarely happen during stent placement. People with heart failure, diabetes, kidney disease or a previous artery blockage have a higher risk of serious complications. Risks include: A blood clot inside your stent, especially if you abruptly stop taking your medicines that protect the stent.
What to expect during a stent placement procedure. In most cases, general anesthesia is not needed for stent placement. You will be given medication to relax and a local anesthetic for the incision site. You may feel pressure during insertion but should not feel pain or feel the catheter being threaded to the heart.
The stent will expand when the balloon is inflated and remains in place when the balloon is deflated and removed. A coronary angioplasty usually takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours. If youre being treated for angina, youll normally be able to go home later the same day or the day after you have the procedure.
Many people are told that a 70 percent blockage of the coronary artery will require a stent, but ultimately, it depends on the individual, their current health status, and the likelihood that the stent will improve the overall quality of life.
Large pieces of beef, poultry, pork and shellfish are most likely to cause a blockage of your stent: o Shred, mince or grind meats and shellfish. o Slow cook meats until tender. o Fish the texture of salmon, tuna, cod and tilapia do not need to be modified. Breads and dried fruits may cause blockage of your stent.
