data from a text file created using notepad can be imported to a worksheet in Excel if the data elements are separated with a delimiter the example text file has data separated with a semicolon as delimiter to import the data to excel worksheet click on data tab click on from text / CSV button this will allow you to select a text file from your computer select the file and click on import button Excel opens another window and displays text file data you can see Excel automatically identified the delimiter as semicolon and separated the data into proper columns if you click on the drop-down list Excel shows the default delimiters it can accept colon comma equal sign etc to import data click on load button you can see data is loaded to the worksheet and you can save the worksheet if needed but you can also use a custom character as a delimiter in your data and Excel can import data using the custom character as delimiter this new text file has data with the delimiter as pound the delimit
