The primary objective of ASC 842 is to increase transparency and comparability in financial reporting related to leases. It requires lessees to recognize lease liabilities and right-of-use assets on their balance sheets for most leases including operating leases with a term greater than 12 months.
An ASC file is a variant of the ASCII format, which is an encryption file used by Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) for secure online communication. It includes messages and digital signatures, as well as plain text and binary information. It also includes a verification key.

ASC 840 refers to the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) Topic 840, and provided guidelines for lessees and lessors to determine how to recognize, measure, and present leases in financial statements.
Under ASC 842, leases less than 12 months in length do not have to be recorded on the balance sheet if the lessee makes the policy election not to include leases of 12 months or less (ASC 842-20-25-2).
The key difference between the two models is that variable payments, other than those that depend on an index or rate, are recognized under ASC 842 only as they are earned. In contrast, variable consideration under ASC 606 is estimated (subject to a constraint) and included in the initial allocation of consideration.
