The IRS says to put your Social Security number on the memo line of a check when sending in a payment. There is a chance of identity theft when you do that.
Structure of Social Security Numbers information contributed by Jerry Crow (crow@anasaz.com) and Barbara Bennett A Social Security Number (SSN) consists of nine digits, commonly written as three fields separated by hyphens: AAA-GG-SSSS. The first three-digit field is called the area number.
The Social Security Number Fraud Prevention Act of 2017 restricts the inclusion of the SSN on any document or package sent by physical mail, unless required for specific reasons.
You should be careful about sharing your number, even when youre asked for it. You should ask why your number is needed, how itll be used, and what will happen if you refuse. The answers to these questions can help you decide if you want to give out your Social Security number.
If you know your Social Security information has been compromised, you can request to Block Electronic Access. This is done by calling our National 800 number (Toll Free 1-800-772-1213 or at our TTY number at 1-800-325-0778).
Never type your SSN into an email or instant message and send it. The majority of such messages can be intercepted and read. Also, dont leave a voicemail that includes your SSN. If you need to contact someone and give them your number, its best to do it in person.
You can upload documents by using the Send Response for Individual Case link on the Electronic Records Express Home page. The upload function is also available while accessing a claimants electronic folder through the Access Claimants Electronic Folder link.
It might be easiest to do this in person: bring your Social Security card into a branch and see if they can help you.
