Social Security numbers do not start with the number 9. It sounds as if you may have them confused with ITIN - Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. Those start with 9. If you have an SSN that starts with 9, it is not a valid one and cannot be used for employment.
The Social Security number is a nine-digit number in the format AAA-GG-SSSS. The number has three parts: the first three digits, called the area number because they were formerly assigned by geographical region; the middle two digits, the group number; and the last four digits, the serial number.
Structure. The Social Security number is a nine-digit number in the format AAA-GG-SSSS. The number has three parts: the first three digits, called the area number because they were formerly assigned by geographical region; the middle two digits, the group number; and the last four digits, the serial number.
Social Security numbers were grouped by the first three digits of the number (called the area number) and assigned geographically starting in the northeast and moving across the country to the northwest. But if you look closely at the distribution pattern you will see an apparent anomaly.
However, to mitigate any shipment delays or returns, FedEx encourages shippers to provide the Ultimate Consignee ID number (EIN or SSN) for all U.S.-bound shipments, regardless of value. For additional information, visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website.
The nine-digit SSN is composed of three parts: The first set of three digits is called the Area Number. The second set of two digits is called the Group Number. The final set of four digits is the Serial Number.
CBP entry forms do ask for your importer number: this is either your IRS business registration number, or if your business is not registered with the IRS or you do not have a business, your social security number will be sufficient.
All social security numbers start with three digits, then two in the middle, and finish with four numbers. The first three numbers are called the area number. The area number shows the region or state where a person was born, and was first adopted in 1936.
