Irrevocable Trusts If the only asset going into the trust is the grantors home which doesnt produce any income, then the trust identification number, as in a revocable trust, can be the grantors Social Security Number.
During the grantors life, the trust is revocable and taxes are paid by the grantor as an individual, using the grantors SSN (Social Security Number). In other words, when an institution requests an SSN or EIN (Employer Identification Number) for trust property, the grantor just uses his or her own SSN.
You cannot put your individual retirement account (IRA) in a trust while you are living. You can, however, name a trust as the beneficiary of your IRA and dictate how the assets are to be handled after your death. This applies to all types of IRAs, including traditional, Roth, SEP, and SIMPLE IRAs.
A revocable trust uses the social security number of its grantor as its tax ID. A grantor will place assets into the revocable trust, and their SSN will be used for tax purposes.
Retirement accounts. Accounts such as a 401(k), IRA, 403(b) and certain qualified annuities should not be transferred into your living trust. Doing so would require a withdrawal and likely trigger income tax.
Even with a revocable trust, an EIN may eventually be needed. Once the grantor passes on, the revocable trust will become an irrevocable trust, and it will need its own EIN. Some trust funds are going to be taxed under their own EIN, while other trusts are going to be taxed to the beneficiary instead.
A trust account that is revocable is still an account that can be controlled by the original grantor of the trust. Consequently, its going to be filed under the grantors own social security number or individual taxpayer identification number.
Does my living trust need an EIN? A revocable living trust does not normally need its own TIN (Tax Identification Number) while the grantor is still alive. During the grantors life, the trust is revocable and taxes are paid by the grantor as an individual, using the grantors SSN (Social Security Number).
