Now, if you go to the lawyer, a lot of the lawyers will give you four, five, six pages of these things, the articles of corporation. No, no, no. A tax identification number (TIN) is used for filing tax returns and exists in different forms. A Social Security number (SSN) is a type of tax ID number just like an Employer Identification Number (EIN) is, the difference being the former is for individuals and the latter for businesses.
An EIN is not linked or associated with your SSN. As such, it provides additional personal privacy protection by using a different number than your SSN for reporting purposes. You can easily apply online for the EIN through the IRS. In addition to privacy, there are other advantages to obtain an EIN.
Multimember LLCs are required to use an EIN to file taxes, but sole proprietors and single-member LLCs are not and can use their Social Security numbers instead.
A sole proprietor without employees and who doesnt file any excise or pension plan tax returns doesnt need an EIN (but can get one). In this instance, the sole proprietor uses his or her social security number (instead of an EIN) as the taxpayer identification number.
