Pelvic pain after a Pap smear is not a common occurrence, but it is important to be aware of this potential side effect. While mild temporary discomfort or spotting is normal after the procedure, persistent or worsening pain should not be ignored.
You generally lie with your knees drawn up and spread apart. If this is difficult for you, you can lie on your side with your knees drawn up. Your nurse gently slides a plastic instrument called a speculum into your vagina so that they can see the cervix clearly.
The patient should be supine, in dorsal lithotomy position to correctly perform a Pap smear (see the image below). The coccyx of the patient must be at the edge of the examination table to provide adequate visualization of the cervix once the speculum is inserted.
If you are confident doing cervical screening in the dorsal position, it really isnt much different to try the left lateral position but it could make a big difference to your patients, especially if they have struggled with painful experiences of screening, have hip or back issues, are a survivor of sexual violence
Conclusion: The presence of endometrial cells in Pap tests may be a harbinger of endometrial pathologies, especially at the age of 50 years and over. The menopausal status is another possible determinant in detecting endometrial carcinoma.
The nurse will ask you to lie back on a bed, usually with your legs bent, feet together and knees apart.
During a Pap test, a tool called a speculum holds the vaginal walls apart. A sample of cells from the cervix is collected using a soft brush and a flat scraping device called a spatula (1 and 2). The cells are placed in a bottle that contains a solution to preserve them (3).
The test is done in your doctors office or clinic. Youll lie back on a table with your feet placed firmly in stirrups. Youll spread your legs, and your doctor will insert a metal or plastic tool called a speculum into your vagina. Theyll open it so that it widens the vaginal walls.
