Heart failure occurs when the heart is unable to provide sufficient blood to meet the bodys needs. Heart failure is not a disease on its own but rather a consequence of other underlying conditions. The impairment of the heart function can be due to an inability to PUMP effectively during systole, called SYSTOLIC heart failure, or inability to FILL properly during diastole, called DIASTOLIC heart failure. Heart failure can be right-sided or left-sided depending on the side that is affected. About two thirds of all leftsided heart failures are caused by systolic dysfunction. In systolic heart failure, ventricular contraction is compromised. This may be caused by any condition that weakens the heart muscle or creates more difficulty for the ventricle to pump. The most common include: - Coronary artery disease and its consequences: Plaque buildup narrows the coronary artery, reducing blood supply to the heart muscle. Complete blockage can cause heart attacks which often leave behind non-

The term, Congestive Cardiac Failure (CCF), is medical jargon, used to describe a group of symptoms and problems caused by a weakened heart muscle.
Left-sided heart failure is the most common type of heart failure. It is usually caused by coronary artery disease (CAD), a heart attack or long-term high blood pressure. Right-sided heart failure: Here the right ventricle of the heart is too weak to pump enough blood to the lungs.
Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator Implantable cardioverter defibrillators detect a life-threatening, rapid heartbeat called ventricular fibrillation and deliver a series of electrical pulses or an electrical shock, restoring the normal heart rhythm.
A left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is implanted in the chest. It helps pump blood from the lower left heart chamber, called the left ventricle, to the rest of the body. A controller unit and battery pack are worn outside the body and are connected to the LVAD through a small opening in the skin.
Cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) is a special type of pacemaker that can correct the problem by making the walls of the left ventricle all contract at the same time. This makes the heart pump more efficiently. Most pacemakers only have 1 or 2 wires to the heart, but CRT requires an extra wire.
Types of implantable heart devices single chamber pacemaker the electrical signal is sent to one chamber of the heart, usually the lower chambers (ventricles) dual chamber pacemaker the electrical signal can be sent to two heart chambers, usually an upper (atrium) and lower chamber (ventricle)
Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators This device is usually inserted transvenously, but for patients at higher risk for infection or for very young patients, electrophysiologists implant it under the skin without the need for wires inside blood vessels.
Patients with mild or moderate CHF may become uncomfortable if they lie in the supine position without elevation of the head. Therefore, these patients may prefer other recumbent positions (i.e., trepopnea).
