5.1. Advantages and Drawbacks of CHAP AdvantagesDrawbacks More secure than PAP The requirement of a pre-shared key Flexibility in supporting different authentication methods CHAP does not offer mutual authentication between the client and the server when only one-way authentication is selected1 more row Jan 16, 2024
Heres how CHAP works: After the link is made, the server sends a challenge message to the connection requestor. The requestor responds with a value obtained by using a one-way hash function known as MD5. The server checks the response by comparing it with its own calculation of the expected hash value.
PAP is more susceptible to cyberattacks than CHAP because it doesnt have the built-in safeguards that CHAP has. Specifically, CHAP doesnt transmit passwords, has an ongoing authentication mechanism, and uses an encrypted calculation to help each entity verify the identity of the other.
CHAP uses a 3-way handshaking protocol, different from TCP. The authenticator sends a challenge packet, and the peer responds with a value using its one-way hash function. The authenticator then compares the received value with its own calculated hash value. If they match, authentication is confirmed.
PAP, or password authentication protocol, is a point-to-point protocol (PPP) authentication method that uses passwords to validate users. It is an internet standard (RFC 1334), password-based authentication protocol. Using PAP, data is not encrypted. It is sent to the authentication server as plain text.
Setting Up PAP Authentication (Task Maps) Gather preconfiguration information. Collect user names and other data that is needed for authentication. Update the password database, if necessary. Ensure that all potential callers are in the servers password database. Create the PAP database. Modify the PPP configuration files.
When a PAP password is sent in a RADIUS packet, the password is encrypted using the shared secret. It is therefore impossible for an attacker to see the PAP password in a RADIUS packet.
The main difference between PAP and CHAP is that PAP uses a Two-Way Handshake and sends the password in clear-text form, whereas CHAP uses a Three-Way Handshake and never sends the password between the parties. As a result, CHAP is much more secure than PAP.
