Whenever you include someone elses words or ideas in your paper, you must give them credit both on the Works Cited (MLA) or References (APA) page at the end of your paper, and right next to the quote (in-text citation).
Cite web postings as you would a standard web entry. Provide the author of the work, the title of the posting in quotation marks, the web site name in italics, the publisher, and the posting date. Follow with the date of access.
Direct quotes in APA Style If the quote is under 40 words, place it in double quotation marks. If the quote is 40 words or more, format it as a block quote. Cite the author, year, and page number with an APA in-text citation.
Use double quotation marks () around a direct quote. A direct quote is a word- for-word report of what someone else said or wrote. You use the exact words and punctuation of the original. Harriet Jacobs writes, She sat down, quivering in every limb (61).
Use direct quotations rather than paraphrasing: when reproducing an exact definition (see Section 6.22 of the Publication Manual), when an author has said something memorably or succinctly, or. when you want to respond to exact wording (e.g., something someone said).
APA 7 Style uses the author-date citation method with parentheses. After a quote, add parentheses containing the authors name, the year of publication, and the page number(s) the quote appears. For quotations that are on one page, type p. before the page number.
Citing an Indirect (Secondary) Source However, if you need to cite an indirect source, as the manual refers to secondary sources, if what you quote or paraphrase is itself a quotation, put the abbreviation qtd. in (quoted in) before the indirect source you cite in your parenthetical reference.
You can shorten quotes by removing words from the middle of the quote and adding ellipses to indicate that you have removed some words. Shortening quotes helps the reader focus on the key information.
Citing a quote in APA Style To cite a direct quote in APA, you must include the authors last name, the year, and a page number, all separated by commas. If the quote appears on a single page, use p.; if it spans a page range, use pp. An APA in-text citation can be parenthetical or narrative.
Long quotations Place direct quotations that are 40 words or longer in a free-standing block of typewritten lines and omit quotation marks. Start the quotation on a new line, indented 1/2 inch from the left margin, i.e., in the same place you would begin a new paragraph.
