Two tests are used to screen for cervical cancer: the Pap test and the HPV test. The Pap test checks for abnormal cells in the cervix, which can lead to cervical cancer if left untreated. The HPV test checks for infection from the human papillomavirus, which is the main cause of cervical cancer and genital warts. Both tests involve collecting cells from the cervix during a pelvic exam using a speculum and a scraper or brush. The cells are examined under a microscope to check for abnormalities and signs of HPV infection. Results are typically available within one to three weeks.

Below are some common questions from our customers that may provide you with the answer you're looking for. If you can't find an answer to your question, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.

You may feel some pressure or mild discomfort when the speculum is put in and opened. Usually a small spatula or tiny brush is used to gently collect cells from the cervix for the Pap test. You may feel a light scratching when they take the cells, or you may feel nothing at all.
Pap Smear Procedure You'll spread your legs, and your doctor will insert a metal or plastic tool (speculum) into your vagina. They'll open it so that it widens the vaginal walls. This allows them to see your cervix. Your doctor will use a swab to take a sample of cells from your cervix.
The pelvic floor muscles are a group of muscles at the base of the pelvis surrounding the vaginal opening. If these muscles are tight or tense, they can narrow the vaginal opening and cause pain with insertion of the speculum. Relaxing the pelvic floor muscles can help decrease pain during pelvic exams.
Applying a small amount of gel to the blades of a speculum before insertion won't alter test results—but will reduce the patient's discomfort.
What about using a numbing agent? If you've had an IUD inserted, your provider probably used a numbing agent to help reduce pain in your vagina and cervix. Unfortunately, it isn't possible to do the same before a Pap smear. The presence of a numbing agent can obscure your results.
Usually a small spatula or tiny brush is used to gently collect cells from the cervix for the Pap test. You may feel a light scratching when they take the cells, or you may feel nothing at all. You may also have some staining or bleeding after. Gynecological exams should not be painful, but they may be uncomfortable.
Putting in and opening the speculum shouldn't hurt. But some women say that it can cause a bit of pressure and discomfort. Because the vagina is surrounded by muscles that can contract or relax, the exam can be more comfortable if you relax the muscles in that area.
Pap smear tests are usually classified as preventative medicine, which is important for checking your health. Cells are scraped from the opening of the cervix and examined under a microscope to see if there are any abnormal cells.
Pap smear screening During a Pap smear, your doctor will insert a small plastic spatula or brush into the vagina to collect cervical cells for testing. A Pap smear can help detect infections, abnormalities and precancerous cells that can lead to cervical cancer.
Do not use douche, bubble bath, or use vaginal medicine for three days before Pap test. You may shower, but do not tub bathe 24 hours before the Pap test. Inform your clinician about additional medications/conditions that may interfere with an accurate test.
