What must you do when emailing PII or PHI?

Encryption. Encryption is a way to make data unreadable at rest and during transmission. Emails including PHI shouldnt be transmitted unless the email is encrypted using a third-party program or encryption with 3DES, AES, or similar algorithms. If the PHI is in the body text, the message must be encrypted.

How do you send emails with PII?

If the body of the email contains PII, the top and bottom of the email must include the marking CUI, and it should include a CUI indicator block. Must be digitally signed and encrypted. (Note: Digitally signing an email is NOT the same as appending a signature block to the bottom of the outgoing message contents.)
