A performance improvement plan is a formal document stating any recurring performance issues along with goals that an employee needs to achieve in order to regain good standing at the company (usually with a specific timeline to complete the plan).
Traditionally, both the supervisor and HR have presented the PIP to the employee. But more recently, the supervisor alone will present the PIP, Levit said.
Dont Quit Because Youre on a PIP. Force Your Employer to Fire You. No matter how miserable you are on the PIP, dont quit your job, if at all possible. If you quit rather than get fired, you wont be eligible for unemployment benefits.
A PIP should include information on acceptable performance levels, specific and measurable objectives that are achievable, relevant, and time-bound, guidance on what management will do to assist the employee, details on progress meetings, and consequences for not meeting the objectives of the plan.
How do you write a PIP performance improvement plan? Identify the performance/behavior that needs improving. Provide specific examples for reasoning. Outline expected standard. Identify training and support. Schedule check-ins and review points. Sign and acknowledge.
For example, an employee who has a problem meeting deadlines, therefore causing delays in other departments, may receive a PIP that outlines a helpful, step-by-step process to meet those set deadlines.
Here are six steps you can use to tell an employee they need to improve: Schedule a meeting. Ask how theyre doing. Explain missed expectations. Set clear goals and metrics. Offer to support them. Schedule a follow-up meeting.
Consider these 5 tips as you craft the performance improvement plan and prepare for your conversation: Be specific and objective. Clearly convey exactly why the employees productivity and/or behavior isnt up to par. Align on a plan. Acknowledge all potential outcomes. Follow up regularly. Document the conversations.
