GOOD EXAMPLES OF ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Provide context for a dip in grades. Explain a schedule conflict (for example: I had to choose between AP Bio and AP Spanish in my senior year, and I chose AP Spanish because of my interest in international relations.) Explain any discrepancies in your application.
While the additional information section is truly optional, it can allow you to provide colleges with much needed context for your achievements in high school. Applying to college is always a challenge, but its easier if you know what admissions officers are looking for.
Schools do not have any access to your information until you add them to your My Colleges list. At that point, they can see only the information you have filled out for their school. They cannot see other schools to which you are applying.
Remember, its not necessary to add anything to the additional information section, so if theres a chance that what you are putting down could be viewed negatively, just leave it blank. You might consider asking a guidance counselor to mention any extenuating circumstances in their recommendation letter for you.
Is it worth using the additional information section on the commonapp? Or should I write the information on my uploaded resume? Only if theres an extenuating circumstance that directly affects what appears on your application, and theres no other place to explain it. Otherwise theres no need to use it.
The best Additional Information essays are brief, factual, and to the point. More concretely, dont rely on metaphor or descriptive language: just tell the admissions officers what they need to know to get the fullest picture of why the thing youre writing about matters to who you are.
Ultimately, this section is not required so it gets a lot less attention than other pieces of the application. Only use this section if you really need to. And remember how quickly admissions officers want to get through an application. Keep things short and sweet when it comes to the Additional Information section.
Some of the basics you need include: Identity cards and Social Security number. School transcripts. Test scores. List of extracurriculars. List of awards and achievements. Recommendation letters, if required by the college. Application and school portal login credentials.
