You may need to update your payroll records if your employee gives you a P45 or starter checklist after youve registered them with HM Revenue and Customs ( HMRC ). You only need a starter checklist from your employee to work out their tax code if either: they do not have a P45.
Independent contractors are individuals hired to perform specific jobs for clients, meaning that they are only paid for their jobs. Since they are not considered employees, they are not subject to workers compensation.
If you have no P45, perhaps because you were on a career break or self-employed before you started employment, then the employer should use a Starter Checklist to work out what tax code to use. (Under RTI, the Starter Checklist replaces form P46).
Is a starter checklist mandatory? If your new employee doesnt have a recent P45 then they must complete a starter checklist. This will allow you, as their employer, to add them to the payroll and determine the correct tax code.
1) You have not entered previous pay and tax data. A new employee normally provides a P45 which details previous pay and tax figures. Check to see that you have entered these figures into the system. 2) The tax was calculated incorrectly by their previous employer.
Statement C. I have another job or receive a state or occupational pension. A new box - Statement D - has also been added to enable former students to indicate to their employer to make Student Loan deductions from their pay.
Even if you do have a P45, you can also complete the starter checklist to tell your new employer about your student loan position the P45 only indicates whether a new employee is already repaying a student loan.
