A proxy card will almost always have a different rosette pattern than a genuine card. It can be one thats well done, but different nonetheless. When doing this test, its important to have a reference card from the same set to go back to, since genuine cards can have different patterns over the years.
MTG proxies are unofficial substitute cards used in the place of official Magic cards. Simple as that. Wizards of the Coast prefers to call them playtest cards, but among the MTG community, proxy is the name thats stuck. Contrary to popular belief, it doesnt matter what form this substitute takes.
Theres a pretty wide range for how to make a proxy. Some people just write the name and abilities on a piece of paper covering a reversed card in a sleeve, some write the name of a card on the back of a bulk card like basic lands, and many people just print out the card in question.
The most important distinction to make here is that proxy cards, no matter how realistic, are not legal in tournament magic. This means that in any official tournament, whether a Mythic Championship or just FNM at you local store, the cards are illegal to play with.
Well, ing to Wizards, they both are illegal. Technically, a proxy is only illegal if it is a copy of a copyrighted work, e.g. the art or the proprietary mana tap symbols found on the card; If I write Mox Saphire on the back of an Island and use it as a Mox for Vintage playtesting, thats perfectly legal.
A proxy card is used during competition to represent an otherwise legal Magic card or checklist card that can no longer be included in a deck without the deck being marked.
A proxy is used when a collectible card game player does not own a card, and it would be impractical for such purposes to acquire the card. This usually occurs when a player desires a card that is cost-prohibitive, or is playtesting with many possible cards.
A proxy card is a card issued by a judge at an event to replace a card that has become damaged during the course of play and may only be used for the duration of that event.
