Each taxpayer claimed on a tax return who receives an IP PIN must have their IP PIN(s) entered on the tax return. This includes the IP PIN of any dependent(s) included in the tax return.
If you want an IP PIN for 2021, visit IRS.gov/IPPIN and use the Get an IP PIN tool. This online process will require that you verify your identity using the Secure Access authentication process if you do not already have an IRS account.
You can call the IRS at 1-800-908-4490 weekdays from 7:00am to 7:00pm local time (Hawaii and Alaska, use Pacific time) to have your IP PIN reissued by mail. However, this can take up to 21 days.
Requesting an IP PIN is strictly voluntary. If you choose not to participate in the program, you can file your return as you normally would. If you are assigned or if you request an IP PIN, you must use italong with your SSNto confirm your identity on any tax returns filed electronically during the calendar year.
